Nonprofit Spotlight: NAACP Coweta County Branch
We are excited to feature NAACP Coweta County! They participated in our 2023 Social Justice Build Event. They are a part of the broader NAACP organization, representing Coweta County in Georgia. They advocate for social justice and civil rights for black people and all people of color.
What is NAACP Coweta County?
Coweta County NAACP is a Nonprofit Organization advocating for equality, investigating racial discrimination complaints, and utilizing the legal department to press significant discrimination cases, including class actions. Voter registration remains a priority as well. The Coweta County branch started in the 60s, and has since fought for equality, political rights, and social inclusion in their county.
I had the pleasure of meeting Volita Almon, the current Vice President of the NAACP Coweta County Branch. Volita started with the organization when she moved to Coweta County 3 years ago. She had experience with another branch and brought that with her, starting as the secretary in Coweta. One of her priorities since joining the branch has been working on economic development opportunities. She has helped empower her county by providing economic empowerment through education, as well as finding scholarship opportunities for underprivilege youth. In addition, she has hosted career fairs, virtual college fairs, and a financial literacy simulation in an attempt to make education and career advancement more accessible. Continuing the education trend, NAACP Coweta County has partnered with other nonprofit organizations to provide school supplies to local schools. Looking forward, they will be starting a voter education campaign in November, looking to stress the importance of political involvement to their community.
48in48 in the Picture!
48in48 built a website for Coweta County NAACP in June for our Social Justice Event. Volita told me she was very impressed with her volunteer build team! She had a smaller team, but nevertheless they were able to develop a fantastic website. She said they had a website before participating in the 48in48 build, but it was very basic. As a part of the coursework and her meeting with her team, she provided websites from other organizations as examples of what she was looking for, and she was very pleased that they were able to take that into account while building her site.
